Full Description

When we’re walking in a forest, hiking in the mountains or just watching a nature documentary, if we look a bit closer, we can notice different infinite patterns or fractals. On the ground, on the slope of a cliff, on the surface of a rock, the way plants grow, on the trunk of a tree, in the waves of the water, where the sea meets the shore; Mother Nature is a beautiful, giant pile of timelessly evolving and forming fractals.

Those of us who have a trained eye in building nature in 3D don’t walk through a hiking route without noticing these patterns immediately. As a Vue artist, how many times have you gone hiking and noticed that the environment you saw was being “converted” in your brain to a scene in Vue? Have you associated the clouds in the sky to settings to achieve similar clouds in CG? Have you ever seen a picture of an existing, but bizarre, unearthly landscape with pretty regular patterns, thinking it was CG? Most 3D landscape artists experience such things on a regular basis, associating patterns of real nature with fractals in CG.

As these never-ending patterns appear everywhere in nature, fractals are the most essential elements when it comes to creating nature in digital form. They play a key role in our perception of a landscape. Materials, ecosystems, shapes, lines, light interactions, scale or density, they’re all controlled by these infinitely complex, self-similar patterns called fractals, combined together as functions built and controlled in the Function Editor. Or as we in the studio named it: The Heart of Vue.

The Function Editor is also considered Vue’s dark maze – scary and easy to get lost in. But if you find your way in it, you find the ultimate key to control your digital world. If you understand fractals and functions, you understand Nature.

In our previous MasterClass we met several attendees who were interested in live webinars focusing on mastering the Function Editor. As we always say, “You order, we deliver”. So we are happy to announce our next MasterClass series: The Heart of Vue – Mastering the Function Editor.

In this series our goal is to show you what you can achieve with the combination of different fractals and nodes. After a quick demonstration of the basics, we will build the majority of the contents on practical examples of fractal-based results. We would like to show you that when it comes to 3D landscape creation, the Function Editor can be your best friend. In the first part of the series (which involves a FREE introductory session and two MasterClasses), we will examine real-life examples of patterns in nature, we will take a look into the key elements of the Function Editor, you will learn to save render time with projection mapping in Vue, you will learn to add details to rock surfaces, and we will build a whole forest powered entirely by fractals.

This Product Includes:

  • Session 1: Introduction to the Function Editor – a quick overview, Fractals, filters & functions and Projection mapping: 3 practical examples to save time on rendering
  • Session 2: The Graph – a more specific look into the three key elements of the Function Editor: number, color & vector outputs, Understanding input & output nodes and Discover numbers, colors and fractals in Mother Nature
  • Session 3: The story of fractals from ancient Africa to modern Hollywood, The Power of Voronoi – a fun and easy way to create detailed rocks and Learn to create a fractal-based forest

Over 3 hours of training!
The webinars are hosted by Michel Rondberg of D&D Creations.

Although the scene was created in Vue 11.5 Infinite, all the elements can be created in every version of Vue, including artist versions (Complete, Studio & Esprit), from Vue 10 and higher. This MasterClass is suitable for every Vue artist, hobbyists or professionals, regardless of the version you have.

The webinars are hosted by Michel Rondberg of D&D Creations.

This tutorial is a recording of D&D Creations live Webinar MasterClass presented on September 26 and 27, 2013 at 3D Art Live.
The tutorials are provided in .MP4 format with a polished HTML interface to make them easy to view and use.

Note: a few features we are showing in this tutorial are not available in Vue’s artist product line. Although, the majority of the operations can be done in all versions of Vue.
